Where to shop trendy fall fashion finds in Northern Virginia

Now that Labor Day weekend has come and gone, it’s time to start thinking fall. And there’s no better way to get ready for the changing seasons than with a wardrobe overhaul. These are five fashion trends that are sure to dominate the streets of NoVA this fall, and the local stores where you can find them.

The Shacket

The Shacket is a shirt-jacket combination, perfect for fall temperatures. At first glance, it looks like your typical fall flannel, but you’ll soon see that it’s thicker than a regular plaid shirt. 3 Sisters on King Street has a great option that combines the best of two favorite fall materials – corduroy and flannel. And we can’t forget to mention that it is reversible.

Long cozy sweaters

Cozy sweaters will never go out of style. This super comfy piece from Nic + Zoe has a slightly thicker weight with intarsia knit, a shawl collar and a longer length to keep you extra warm on cooler days. Longer sweaters also allow fashionistas on a budget to make a statement with one piece. Lemoncello Boutique in Arlington, VA sells this Nic + Zoe sweater (and other great fall favorites).

The Ignorant aesthetic

If you’re a 90s kid like me, chances are you remember the movie Ignorant. The aesthetic in the film is back, along with other trends from the 90s. Think plaid skirts and suits, platform oxfords and loafers, chokers and more. This plaid mini skirt from South Moon Under (Fairfax, Reston, Arlington and more) is something Cher Horowitz would definitely want in her super-tech-advanced (for now) closet.

Sequins and fringes around the 1920s

They always say fashion comes back, right? Well, 100 years ago when flaps dominated the style scene, sequins and fringes were all the rage. And you can now find that shiny style back in NoVA thanks to Alexandria’s Mint Condition. A recent find that pays homage to the 1920s, but with a modern twist, is this black sequin zip from Veronica Beard.

Loose-fitting jeans with a high waist

Rejoice! Loose, high-waisted jeans are officially back in style. Teenagers have been wearing them for the last few years now and the adult fashion scene is taking notice. Francesca’s Boutique, with multiple locations in the DMV, sells lots of fun finds in the jeans department. These Harper Heritage Straight Leg Destructed jeans feature scoop pockets, a coin pocket at the front and patch pockets at the back. In addition, the worn details together with a sweater and sneakers give a perfect autumn look.
