Sports fans are often superstitious, performing over-the-top rituals on game days from special seat selections to only wearing certain clothing in hopes that their team will secure a victory.
Now, a new superstition has arisen in MLB, so much so that it’s being called a “curse” thanks to one viral tweet of USA TODAY Sports columnist Bob Nightengale.
And it has been awarded to a respected soft ice cream company.
Enter the “curse of Dairy Queen,” which recently came to light after news broke Friday that San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. tested positive for a banned substance and would be suspended for 80 games.
Tatis Jr. is the fourth player to partner with Dairy Queen this year along with fellow MLB stars Bryce Harper, Cody Bellinger and Tim Andersen to make things go wrong.
Harper broke his thumb and hasn’t played since June 26; Anderson is currently out 4-6 weeks with a torn ligament in his hand; and Bellinger is having arguably his worst season to date. Now the 23-year-old Tatis Jr. miss the rest of this season and a good chunk of 2023, in addition to losing $3 million in salary.
Tatis Jr. said in a brief statement that he “inadvertently took a medication to treat ringworm that contained Clostebol,” a testosterone-boosting anabolic steroid that has been on MLB’s banned list since it began testing for steroids in 2003.
The players were signed as part of a new integrated marketing campaign between Dairy Queen and MLB launched in April that includes new menu items and giveaways.
Many noted the irony on social media, saying the four men were screwing up their careers and seasons by agreeing to star in upcoming commercials and commercials from the fast-food chain.
Is it a Dairy Queen curse?
Asking because it certainly seems like a pattern.

Dairy Queen better stay away from the judge, if they curse him it might be time to get Dairy Queen canceled

I think an Angry Hidin will be unleashed when I said the Dairy Queen Curse came to Bryce Harper the moment Harper appeared on the Dairy Queen commercial to start the Dairy Queen Curse in the MLB.

The last time I had Dairy Queen was right before the Giants were swept in a 4-game vs. Dodgers, so maybe this curse has something to do with it

The Curse of Dairy Queen? They selected 4 players this season to promote their ice cream and sandwiches:
Bryce Harper: Used thumb, out since June 26.
Tim Anderson: Broken finger, out 6 weeks.
Cody Bellinger: Hitting .210 with a 668 OPS.
Fernando Tatis: Suspended for PED use.

So-called “curses” in the sports world are common, and many are taken seriously by diehard fans, the most notable being the Madden Curse, in which football players who starred on the cover of the video game had a sort of mid-season meltdown. or career-ending injury.
Dairy Queen has yet to publicly comment on the curse or Tatis’ suspension and how it may affect the upcoming campaign.
