A water park where a “kind and clever” girl of 11 died has been prevented from reopening due to health and safety concerns.

Liquid Leisure, near Datchet, must show it has reduced the risk of drowning before it can welcome customers back, The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has said.

Tragedy struck when Kyra Hill ‘didn’t come back up’ on August 6, sparking panic.

An emergency crew was called to the scene at around 3.55pm, but she was not found until just after 5.10pm.

She later died at Wexham Park Hospital and Thames Valley Police said the case was being treated as unexplained but not suspicious. A file was prepared for the coroner, officers added.

Liquid Leisure said the water assault course will remain closed “out of respect” for the girl’s family until the beginning of this week.

But following a health and safety investigation by the council, it will remain closed until further notice.

A council spokesman said: ‘We have issued a notice banning all leisure activity associated with the lake until Liquid Leisure has satisfied the council that they have appropriate and adequate risk assessments to prevent or reduce the risk of drowning.

“We again want to express our deepest condolences to the girl’s family and friends.”

Kyra has been described by schoolmates as someone who was “top of every class” and “liked to make people smile”.

It comes after a mother, 41, who witnessed the incident, described a chaotic reaction when it became clear that someone was missing.

“Not everyone was wearing life jackets” and there appeared to be “a lack of lifeguards and no plan on how to deal with such an incident”, she said.

In a statement last week, Liquid Leisure said: ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and all those affected by this desperately tragic and upsetting incident.

“As Thames Valley Police are in the early stages of their investigation, it would not be appropriate for us to make any further comment, but we will continue to fully support and assist them throughout the process.”
