First trailer for Disney+ twist on Romeo & Juliet starring Kaitlyn Dever

Disney+ has released the first trailer for an upcoming romantic comedy Rosalinea new twist on Shakespeare’s classic love story Romeo and Julie.

The film retells the tragic story of the star-crossed lovers from the perspective of Rosaline (played by Kaitlyn Dever), Romeo’s first love and Juliet’s cousin.

But when Romeo (Kyle Allen) has a chance encounter with Juliet (Isabela Merced) at a party, Rosaline does everything she can to thwart their famous romance and put an end to their wedding.

As Rosaline tells us in the new trailer, “The greatest love story ever told… was missing a chapter.” Her.

The film may be set during the Elizabethan era, but it puts its own modern Gen Z spin on things (expect to hear something more along the lines of “get up lazy cow” instead of “shall I compare you to a summer’s day”).

Starring alongside the central trio is Sean Teale (Shine), Minnie Driver (Modern love) and Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale).

Rosaline also reunites Dever with her Booksmart co-star Nico Hiraga, who played skater boy Tanner in the 2019 comedy.

The film comes from Yes, God, yes director Karen Maine from a screenplay by Scott Neustadter and Michael H Weber. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine are producing, while Dever, Neustadter, Weber and Emily Morris serve as executive producers.

Dever recently starred in Tnot to Paradise plays Julia Roberts and George Clooney’s daughter. It also reunited her with another Booksmart co-star in American Horror Stories Billie Lourd.

Recently talked to Digital spy about how previously working together helped when it came to playing best friends in the film, Dever said, “We were so excited because, in Booksmartwe didn’t have a lot of one-on-one time, and then we knew we were going to get that in this one, and that definitely helped.

“We would go on as many adventures as we could on the weekends, and she’s just the best. Doing these scenes with her was just so much fun.”

Rosaline will premiere on Disney+ under the Star banner in the UK on October 14.
